It has become tradition in the Smith household for us all to have a glass of mulled wine on Christmas Eve.
Not only does it fill the house with the aroma of festive spices but it is always nice to have a warm drink ready to welcome your visitors.
Just as important, this mulled wine recipe is beautiful if you substitute the red wine with cranberry juice for the designated drivers over the festive season.
You don’t have to use an expensive bottle of red wine for this recipe, as you’re adding lots of warm spices and citrus flavours you can always choose a less expensive wine.
- 1 bottle red wine
- 500ml white lemonade
- 2 cinnamon sticks
- Pinch of grated nutmeg
- 2 crushed cardamom seeds
- 4 star anise
- 8 cloves
- 1 orange sliced
- 1 lemon sliced
- 100g brown sugar
- Very simply, place all of the ingredients into a large saucepan and simmer gently for 10-15 minutes, without boiling.
- Ideally allow to rest overnight to allow all the flavours to mingle
- To serve, strain, reheat and pour your mulled wine into heatproof glasses garnished with an orange slice studded with cloves and a cinnamon stick.
